Objectives

The main purpose of the course is to provide a full understanding of ethical issues and dilemmas at the level of the organization and society at large, ranging from the basic concepts of moral philosophy to those of corporate social responsibility. For this purpose, ethical problems and dilemmas will be addressed and examined, and their implications and possible handling strategies will be assessed. The course also seeks to provide students with an understanding of the individual and organizational factors that affect the ethical decision-making process. These learning outcomes are achieved by discussiong the appropriate concepts and applying them to practical situations with a relevant ethical content.

Learning outcomes and competences

After completing this course, the participants are expected to:

  1. Understand the importance of business ethics and corporate responsibility by knowing and applying different approaches to social, economic and environmental responsibility in today context.
  2. Identify the foundantions associated to the responsibility of management positions, and discuss their implications.
  3. Examine the decision making process and identify the individual and organizational factors that influence such a process, namely in the context of the strategic management of corporate goals.
  4. Identify formulations of strategies out of the market (with the management of the intangible perspectives of the business model) as factors of competitive advantage.

Module I
Knowing and discussing the application of the foundations of corporate management and social, economic and environmental responsibility.

Module II
Knowing and dicussing the application of the concepts of ethics, corporate social responsibility and out of market strategy.

Module III
Knowing and dicussing the application of the corporate social responsibility and sustainability reporting, as well as the foundations of the corporate ESG evolution and application as factors of competitive advantage.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course incorporates a variety of teaching and learning methods - short lectures, readings, and case studies. Students are expected to demonstrate mastery of the material through class participation.

 

This course provides the option of distributive assessment with a final exam, so students final marks will result from the weighted average of the marks assigned to the following components:

  • Overall understanding of the contents - group assignment involving a written report (40%)
  • Final Exam (60%)
Grades are from 0 to 20. Requires a minimum of 10 points to pass and a minimum grade in each assignment component of 45%.
