Let’s face it: there is not enough sound art in the world. Museums are mostly packed with visual presentations of ideas, worlds and statements. Most of the time, sound ‘only’ has a supporting role. Do curators, visitors and artists realise it could take the lead?

[…] Working with light, the work of light, making things with and about light, is practice. When we speak of someone as “practical”, we think of a one-to-one relationship with materials and tools. That privileged close relation is still widespread in media, but the tools have become increasingly complex, and the forms of practice increasingly involve complex interactions not only of human beings but also technologies doing things, working, making.

[…] Light is the condition of all vision. The visual media are our most important explorations of this condition.

[…] By media I understand the physical processes—matter, energy dimension, and form—in which all human communication takes place, including money, sex, transport, weapons, and the panoply of communication channels through which we put into practice what social scientists abstract under the names “politics” and “economics”. Before we can communicate, we mediate.

[…] Mediation is the ground of relationship, the relationship that precedes and constructs subjects and objects.

[…] Light is such a mediation not only between people but also between human and nonhuman worlds. Light fills and forms the world.

[…] the control of light forms the foundation of contemporary vision.
